it's interesting to me that Mr. alviene's quote shows that from yoga's beginning in this country there was that push to portray yoga as simply a stretching practice. nothing mystical at all about it :)
Yes, it's a long-standing concern. When Yoga first emerged in America, there was explicit concern about its connection to hindoo "heathenism," which led early practitioners to distance themselves from the practice's hindu origins (cf. the emergence of "Christian Yoga" in the early 20th century)
