I just started a newsletter focusing on Filipino newspapers published in the U.S. before WWII, but I will also do occasional posts on other ethnic newspaper history. I will provide a link to your newsletter in my 2nd issue (which I'm working on now). https://commonwealthcafe.substack.com

One person who predated Swami Vivekananda in India was Dr. Anandi-bai Joshee, the first Indian woman doctor. My biography of her is titled "Radical Spirits" and it has tons of information about her Hinduism. For example, before leaving India in 1883, she had vowed that she would remain a vegetarian and stick to Indian attire -- and she did so. Through her, Americans were introduced to the religion as well as the culture (including its progressive elements and internal conflicts relating to widows and child marriage) of Hinduism.

In fact, the book also has very interesting (and newly discovered) information about her posthumous connection to the Parliament of World Religions to attend which Swami Vivekananda came to the US.
